Alates (winged termites)
Reproductive flying termites that swarm to start new colonies. Their presence near your home signals an established colony nearby.
Alates emerge from established colonies, fly briefly, drop their wings, mate, and start new colonies. They look superficially like flying ants but have straight (not bent) antennae and four equal-sized wings.
Alate swarms in Adelaide are most common in late spring and early summer (October to December), particularly on warm humid evenings after rain.
Finding shed wings on windowsills, around external lights, or inside light fittings is a strong signal that a colony is established near your property. Book a pest inspection promptly.
