Coptotermes acinaciformis
The dominant subterranean termite species in metropolitan Adelaide. Highly destructive, builds large underground colonies.
Coptotermes acinaciformis is responsible for the majority of structural termite damage in South Australian homes. They build underground colonies that can number in the millions and tunnel underground to find timber food sources.
Their preferred food is softwoods (pine framing) but they readily attack hardwoods too. They're often invisible from the surface - they tunnel up through timber from inside, leaving outer surfaces intact.
Annual AS 4349.3 timber pest inspections are recommended for any Adelaide home with timber framing, decking, or sub-floor, particularly properties bordering bushland or with reactive clay soils.
Mud tubes
Pencil-thin earthen tunnels built by subterranean termites to bridge from soil to timber while staying protected from air and predators.
Frass
Sand-like termite excreta or borer dust. The visible accumulation of timber pellets indicates active timber pest activity.
Termite barrier
Chemical or physical barrier installed around a building to prevent termite entry. Required on new builds under AS 3660.
