RCD (Residual Current Device)
Safety switch that cuts power instantly if it detects current leaking to earth. Required on most circuits in modern Australian homes.
RCD protection is mandated on power and lighting circuits in new homes under AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules). Older Adelaide homes may have an RCD only on power circuits, or no RCD at all (just old ceramic-fuse switchboards).
Inspectors will note switchboard age and visible RCD protection. If the switchboard is old (no RCDs, ceramic fuses), it's a flag for upcoming electrical upgrade costs - typically $1,500-$3,000 for a switchboard replacement.
Note: a building inspection is not a full electrical compliance test. If the inspector flags concerns, engage a licensed electrician for a Wiring Rules compliance test.
